Hey Girl! I know, I know, Louis Vuitton handbags are steady increasing in retail price, which is making the second hand market hot. If you are in the market for one you may want to seriously consider an authentic used Louis Vuitton.
With supply being low and demand high, preloved luxury is the way to go. Now, I have purchased both new and used designer handbags and let me say I prefer the used ones.
Mainly because I am more comfortable wearing the bag, the bag is already broken in, and of course the coins saved from going preloved.
Not to mention Louis Vuitton prints are like neutral and they practically go with everything. I wear mine with whatever, literally like check my IG.
If you haven’t done so already be sure to check out my blog post 8 Tips for Buying Your First Designer Handbag for my best tips on making a luxury handbag purchase. Even if you are on your second, third, or tenth purchase, there is some gems in that post from my experience.
What You Need to Know Before Buying a Used Louis Vuitton Purse
Be sure to Pin 📌 THIS POST SO THAT YOU WILL HAVE IT AS A REFERENCE WHEN YOU’RE READY TO BUY.
1. Know the condition of the bag
The first thing about buying a used designer handbag is knowing that used doesn’t necessarily mean “used.” There are a lot of of bags out there in mint condition but they are not being sold from the retailer so they are considered ‘used.’ In fact, most of my used luxury handbags have very little to no signs of wear.
If you’re looking for a great deal, price and condition have an inverse relationship when it comes to used luxury handbags. Meaning, the lower the price is, the worse you can expect the condition of the bag to be. The higher the price or the closer it is to retail, the nicer the bag should be.
If you are purchasing the bag in person, you want to be sure to inspect the bag for holes, rips, tears, loose stitching, stains and discoloration. These are things that usually do not have an easy fix, if they’re fixable at all.
If you are purchasing your bag online, request as many pictures as you can.
Also, ask about the smell of the bag. Ideally, you want a bag that comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home, and is free of storage odors. Getting a stinky bag can really ruin the joy of the splurge. Don’t be afraid to ask about this when shopping online, most sellers will be honest about the smell of the bag.

2. Have a price point in mind
I have a rule of thumb when buying used bags.
Regardless of the condition, I need to at least be saving 20%. Otherwise, I might as well buy the bag new. So if a new Louis Vuitton Neverfull retails new at $2,000.00 the most I am willing to pay for a used Louis Vuitton Neverfull is $1,600.00 regardless of the condition of the bag.
Anything more than that and I could just purchase the bag in store with peace of mind, warranty, and champagne.
Also, remember that the lower the price is, the worse you can expect the condition of the bag to be. So you want to be real about what you expect to pay for a nice pre owned Louis Vuitton.
My Used Louis Vuitton Speedy 25 that I Purchased on Poshmark
This Louis Vuitton Speedy 25 Damier Ebene currently retails for $1,350.00. I purchased this used for $795.00 in March of 2020. Poshmark provides an authentication service for purchases over $500.00.
3. Make sure you have all the original parts
Sometimes you will come across listing online for used Louis Vuitton purses that have had the handles replaced or painted. There is an entire market for ‘project bags’, which are bags that resellers buy in poor condition then upcycle for better use.
Now let me be clear, it is nothing wrong with purchasing one of these bags if that is what you want. The issue is most people don’t want that. They want the bag with all of its parts as it left the manufacturer.
Be sure to ask the seller if the bag has been altered in any way.
4. Know your seller
I cannot stress this enough. If you are buying from a local resale shop. Check the reviews and do thorough research. If you are buying online, check out my video below for buying on Poshmark. These tips are good for other online marketplaces as well.
Btw, everything in the cover photo I bought used, except for the make up of course.
Always, always, always, get a second opinion. See #7 for details.
5. Research the bag
Know the bag that you are intending to buy inside and out. Like literally go to the store, try it on. If you have a friend that owns the bag, ask to look at it. Know what the authentic version of the bag looks like.
I talk about this in the video below where I ventured out and purchased a used Louis Vuitton Toiletry 15. This used Louis Vuitton SLG (small leather good) was under the $500 authentication threshold on Poshmark so I had to be sure it was authentic. After it arrived, I compared it to the bigger version Toiletry 19 that I purchased from the Louis Vuitton store. Check out my comparison video below.
6. Know the return policy
We have all bought something and realized we didn’t love it as much as we thought we would. Luxury handbags are no different.
7. Always get a second opinion
Regardless of where you decide to purchase your handbag from, be sure to get a second opinion on the authentication. A lot of brick and mortar consignment shop offer authentication services as another source of revenue.
Here in Atlanta I use Atlanta Luxury Bags for authentication and it costs $35. I had my used Louis Vuitton Cannes authenticated by them, I talk about it more in the video below. Btw, they also have used Louis Vuitton bags for sale 100% authentic.
